چکیده

c s t u a 1 b d f a a i 1 b Collaborative research was conducted at the USDARS Subtropical Agricultural Research Center in southrn Texas to assess the microbial control potential of eauveria bassiana and Paecilomyces fumosoroseus gainst Bemisia whiteflies. Laboratory assays demontrated the capacity of both pathogens to infect Bemisia rgentifolii nymphs on excised hibiscus leaves incubated t relative humidities as low as 25% at 23 6 2°C (ca. 35% nfection by B. bassiana and P. fumosoroseus resulted rom applications of 0.6–1.4 3 103 conidia/mm2 of leaf surace). In small-scale field trials using portable air-assist prayers, applications at a high rate of 5 3 1013 conidia in 80 liters water/ha produced conidial densities of ca. –2.5 3 103 conidia/mm2 on the lower surfaces of cucurbit eaves. Multiple applications of one isolate of P. fumosoroeus and four isolates of B. bassiana made at this rate at 4o 5-day intervals provided G90% control of large (thirdnd fourth-instar) nymphs on cucumbers and cantaloupe elons. The same rate applied at 7-day intervals also rovided G90% control in zucchini squash, and a oneourth rate (1.25 3 1013 conidia/ha) applied at 4to 5-day ntervals reduced numbers of large nymphs by G85% n cantaloupe melons. In contrast to the high efficacy f the fungal applications against nymphs, effects gainst adult whiteflies were minimal. The results ndicated that both B. bassiana and P. fumosoroseus ave strong potential for microbial control of nymphal hiteflies infesting cucurbit crops. r 2000 Academic Press

Antagonism between Beauveria bassiana and imidacloprid when combined for Bemisia argentifolii (Homoptera: Aleyrodidae) control.

Imidacloprid and the entomopathogenic fungus Beauveria bassiana (Balsamo) Vuillemin are both used to control the whitefly Bemisia argentifolii Bellows & Perring. We tested whether the two control strategies acted additively, synergistically, or antagonistically when combined for whitefly control. We found antagonism in that B. bassiana inhibited the effectiveness of imidacloprid. When B. bassia...

Pathogenicity, Ovicidal Action, and Median Lethal Concentrations (LC50) of Entomopathogenic Fungi against Exotic Spiralling Whitefly, Aleurodicus dispersus Russell

Biological control using entomopathogenic fungi could be a promising alternative to chemical control. Entomopathogenic fungi, Beauveria bassiana (Balsamo) Vuillemin, Metarhizium anisopliae (Metschnikoff) Sorokin, Lecanicillium lecanii (Zimmerm.) Zare and Gams, and Paecilomyces fumosoroseus (Wize) Brown and Smith, were tested for their pathogenicity, ovicidal effect, and median lethal concentrat...

Update on the Status of Bemisia tabaci in the UK and the Use of Entomopathogenic Fungi within Eradication Programmes

The sweetpotato whitefly Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius) (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae) continues to be a serious threat to crops worldwide. The UK holds Protected Zone status against this pest and, as a result, B. tabaci entering on plant material is subjected to a policy of eradication. Both B and Q Bemisia biotypes are now regularly intercepted entering the UK. With increasing reports of neonicotinoid ...

chi3 Gene Encodes a Chitinase, CHIT30: An Attempt To Locate chi3 in Entomopathogenic Fungi

Entomopathogenic fungi are naturally occurring pathogens of some insects that produce enzymes capable of penetrating into an insect’s cuticle. Chitinases are thought to be responsible for entomopathogenic fungi’s ability to degrade cuticle. Primers were designed for the chi3 gene which encodes a chitinase CHIT30, from the mRNA transcript present in Metarhizium anisopliae. These primers were una...

Isolation and characterization of microsatellite loci from the entomopathogenic hyphomycete, Paecilomyces fumosoroseus

Nine microsatellite markers were isolated from the entomopathogenic haploid fungus Paecilomyces fumosoroseus. Genetic diversity was assessed in 26 P. fumosoroseus isolates originated from the whitefly Bemisia tabaci collected in various geoclimatic areas. Eight loci were polymorphic with an observed number of alleles ranging from two to six. The loci differentiated some isolates and group of is...
